Aging and over-aging of infrastructures is one of the most crucial and challenging issues faced by the public and private sectors today. Lack of corrosion maintenance and fire prevention programs, are among the main causes of the crumbling and failure of many infrastructure facilities like vehicular bridges and highways, buildings, airports, water distribution mains and sewers.

Critical to defeat corrosion, is the proper evaluation of the severity of the environment where the structure is located, and the exposure time to that environment. Many factors affect the susceptibility of infrastructures to corrosion such as salinity and proximity to seawater, humidity, pollution, temperature and lighting.
